The mystery of the monastery, the mist over the lake
What Is This City Known For?
Trabzon was one of the major port cities on the historic Silk Road along the Black Sea and served as the capital of the Empire of Trebizond, a successor state to the Byzantine Empire, from 1204 to 1461. One of the city’s most famous landmarks is the Sumela Monastery, a Greek Orthodox monastery built on the slope of a cliff. It is also known for its own Hagia Sophia (a structure from the Byzantine era, distinct from the one in Istanbul, which has undergone transformations from a mosque to a museum and back to a mosque). The region is also recognized as one of Turkey’s leading hazelnut-producing centers.
About
Trabzon, with the mystery of the Sümela Monastery—carved into the rock and dating back to the Byzantine era— the misty, green landscapes of Uzungöl, the panoramic view of the city from Boztepe, and delicacies such as Akçaabat köfte, making it one of the most visited and culturally rich provinces in the Eastern Black Sea region. It offers a unique blend of both historical and natural beauty.
