A Thousand Years of History Reflected in the Waters of the Yeşilırmak
Amasra not to be confused with: İsimleri çok benzer ama farklı şehirler — Amasya Yeşilırmak kıyısında iç kesimde tarihi bir şehir, Amasra ise bir Karadeniz sahil kasabası.
What Is This City Known For?
Amasya is known for the royal tombs from the Kingdom of Pontus, carved into the cliffs overlooking the Yeşilırmak Valley. The fact that it is the birthplace of the ancient geographer and historian Strabo (known in antiquity as Amaseia) underscores the city’s importance in ancient times. During the Ottoman period, it was one of the cities to which princes were sent for their military training. The historic Ottoman mansions lining the riverbank are among the city’s most recognizable sights.
About
Amasya is one of the richest provinces on the Black Sea coast, thanks to the massive tombs carved into the rocks by the kings of Pontus, the Ottoman waterfront mansions lining the banks of the Yeşilırmak River, and its historic identity as the place where princes received their military training. With its narrow streets, riverside views, and apple orchards, it offers a peaceful getaway.
Spring and fall are the most photogenic seasons, and the summer months are also cool along the riverbank
