Giresun’s ancient name is Kerasus, and it is generally accepted that cherries were brought to Rome from this region and that the English word “cherry” derives from this ancient name. Giresun Island, located off the coast of the city, is the only large island in the Black Sea and is associated with local legends. The region is one of Turkey’s primary hazelnut-producing areas.
