Ankara was declared the capital of the Republic of Turkey in 1923; Anıtkabir is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic. In the city, known as Ankyra in ancient times, stands the Temple of Augustus, which houses a preserved copy of Roman Emperor Augustus’s political testament (Res Gestae).
