What Is This City Known For?
Cappadocia is famous for its intriguing rock formations known as “fairy chimneys,” which were formed by thousands of years of erosion of volcanic tuff. The region has become one of the world’s most renowned destinations for hot-air balloon tours. Underground cities such as Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı—carved into the rock by early Christians as shelters and places of worship—along with rock-cut churches featuring Byzantine-era frescoes on their walls, showcase the region’s rich history. Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
