What Is This City Known For?
İzmit, the capital of Kocaeli, was known as Nicomedia in ancient times and briefly served as one of the empire’s administrative centers during the reign of Roman Emperor Diocletian. Today, it is one of Turkey’s major industrial and port cities, located on the shores of the Gulf of İzmit.
About
Kocaeli (İzmit) is a historic city that was conquered by Orhan Gazi, the son of Osman Gazi, and holds the title of the Ottoman Empire’s first capital. Although it is one of Turkey’s most important industrial centers today, it also serves as a destination for nature tourism, thanks to the ski slopes of Kartepe and the coastal strip of the Izmit Gulf.
