What Is This City Known For?
Istanbul is known for being the only major city that spans two continents—one in Europe and one in Asia. It served as the capital of the Byzantine Empire (as Constantinople) and, later, the Ottoman Empire for centuries. Hagia Sophia—first a Byzantine cathedral, then a mosque, a museum for many years, and now a mosque once again—and the Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque are among the city’s iconic landmarks. The Grand Bazaar is considered one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets. Topkapı Palace served as the administrative and residential center for the Ottoman sultans for approximately 400 years. The Bosphorus is the strait that physically divides the city between two continents.
About
Istanbul is the only city that bridges the continents of Europe and Asia, carrying a 1,600-year legacy of Rome, Byzantium, and the Ottoman Empire. From the historic peninsula of Sultanahmet to the lively streets of Beyoğlu, and from ferry tours on the Bosphorus to the labyrinth of the Grand Bazaar, it offers endless opportunities for exploration. With its Byzantine mosaics, Ottoman palaces, and modern art museums, it is a hub for cultural tourism.
