What Is This City Known For?
Bodrum was known as Halicarnassus in ancient times and was home to the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus (the monumental tomb of King Mausolus—the origin of the word “mausoleum”), which was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Bodrum Castle (St. Peter’s Castle) was built by the Knights of Rhodes and today houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. With its whitewashed architecture and vibrant nightlife, it has become one of Turkey’s most famous Aegean resort towns.
